Our Story: How Support Is Changing Koby's World

Maying Wang
Koby is 15 years old. He is a kind, gentle, and social teenager who enjoys being around people, but he experiences the world differently. Koby has autism and an intellectual disability, and although he can speak, it is often hard for him to express what he truly wants to say. Simple things like asking for help, joining a conversation, or explaining how he feels, can be very challenging. Because of this, Koby sometimes feels frustrated when others don't understand him. As his parent, one of my biggest hopes is to give him the tools to communicate, connect with others, and feel confident in his daily life. The iPad he received is not just a device; it is his voice. With it, Koby can use a communication app to express his needs, share his thoughts, and participate more fully in conversations. It helps reduce his frustration and gives him a way to be understood. We are already seeing how it opens new opportunities for him to engage with others and be more independent. Swimming lessons are just as meaningful in a different way. Water has always been something Koby enjoys, but also something that requires close supervision for safety. Learning to swim is not only an important life skill — it gives him confidence, physical strength, and a sense of freedom. In the water, he is calm, happy, and proud of what he can do. Together, these supports are helping Koby grow — not just in skills, but in confidence and quality of life. The iPad helps him communicate with the world, and swimming helps him feel strong and capable within it. We are deeply grateful to A Voice for Mikey and The Mar5 Gratitude Foundation for making this possible. Your support is not just providing resources, it is giving Koby more independence, more confidence, and a greater chance to connect with the world around him. Thank you for making a real difference in our lives.
